Brad Dutz 4tet
Created in 2005, the Brad Dutz Quartet is a one-of-a-kind ensemble featuring four whimsical personalities woven together by angular yet playful compositions by percussionist Brad Dutz. The ensemble has multiple CDs downloadable on Bandcamp. The ensemble has performed at the Redcat Theatre, Pasadena' s Boston Court, Cal Arts, Cal State Long Beach, and other educational institutions. The quartet has also done various clinics and masterclasses at all levels on the topics of improvisation in composition.
Dutz and his band members come from a diverse musical background influenced by Indian, Afro-Cuban and Brazilian music. This adds a plethora of colors to the obvious presence of Jazz and Classical aesthetics throughout all the compositions. Each member of the band adds a specific and irreplaceable voice to the sound of the ensemble that must be experienced live to fully appreciate its beauty.
Oboe, cello, bass clarinet and marimba form a unique sounding ensemble for jazz music with mallet percussion being the chordal instrument. Cello and bass clarinet can cover various bass lines, but still have the capability to play sweeping melodic phrases. Moreover, the prominent tambour of the oboe adds a highly unique sound to the flexible textures created by the lower voices. Meanwhile, the mallet percussion, though sonically mechanical, carries the most harmonic diversity and rhythmic clarity. This allows Dutz to drive the quartet using intricate syncopation without sacrificing a chordal presence. The ensemble is most accurately defined as chamber-jazz with the texture of a classical quartet.
